Potassium is vital for clover growth and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. There is a high requirement for potassium in pasture – it is second only to nitrogen in plant requirements. Potassium deficiency leads to poor nitrogen utilisation.
Altum carries one BioGro-permitted potassium product, and a further two products that have restricted BioGro status.
Our BioGro-permitted potassium product is natural sulphate of potash (SOP). Although most SOP fertilisers are manufactured, there are naturally occurring forms of this substance. Natural SOP is usually made by allowing mineral-rich water to evaporate under the sun’s heat. Eventually the minerals crystalise and can be harvested. The natural SOP sold by Altum is not only a good source of potassium, but it also contains sulphur. SOP can be applied on its own or mixed in with other fertilisers.
Natural muriate of potash (MOP) is a BioGro-restricted item; however, if you do not need to apply sulphur, then this product may be an economically better choice for your farm than natural SOP. Our natural MOP is sourced from salt deposits in Canada.
